Client Bookkeeper

The opportunity

We are recruiting for this position to help meet the increasing demand for our bookkeeping services from our clients. You will have experience in bookkeeping and VAT, preferably in an accountancy practice or bureau. In the role, you will have a regular portfolio of clients to support, with a focus on timely and accurate client service. Being flexible to the ever-changing technology available to maximise efficiencies in processing, you will be familiar with key software. Flexibility in hours is offered to reflect the cycle of bookkeeping and VAT needs, however we would expect this to be an average of up to 20 hours per week.

general responsibilities

  • Carry out all bookkeeping and data processing using accounting systems of the client or appropriate accounting system on weekly/monthly/quarterly basis.
  • Maintain purchase ledger, sales ledger, nominal ledger, fixed asset register (where relevant)
  • Carry out monthly reconciliation of all control accounts
  • Calculate and process monthly journals for prepayment/ accruals/depreciation/payroll and other monthly adjustments
  • Prepare and submit VAT returns in advance of deadline
  • For some clients, assist in preparation of management accounts
  • Manage portfolio to ensure work completed to clients’ timetable expectations and HMRC deadlines
  • Be involved in the promotion and expansion of our bookkeeping offering
  • Appropriate use of IT and applications which are suited to individual client needs
  • Assisting the Business Services team as necessary to ensure there is a joined up offering to our clients as well as being involved in preparation of year end accounts

skills and qualities

  • Some bookkeeping experience, ideally in a role where you have been responsible for several businesses’ bookkeeping
  • Experience/understanding of VAT legislation
  • Proficient and confident with IT
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Focussed on meeting deadlines through excellent organisation and multi-tasking

desirable skills

  • Experience or awareness of Excel, Xero, Quickbooks, Sage and automated processing programmes such as Dext
  • Commercial approach to work
  • Clean driving licence with access to a car for business use as some work may be at client premises
